NIMBYism: Not In My Backyard; signifying opposition to the proposed development or location of something considered undesirable or inappropriate in the local neighborhood, in this case low-income or affordable housing.
In case you missed it, President Trump has rescinded the AFFH (Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing) Rule, which was put in place to promote fair housing and prevent discrimination. This is NIMBYism at the highest level. The President tweeted at 12:19 PM on July 29: “I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low-income housing built in your neighborhood…Your housing prices will go up based on the market, and crime will go down. I have rescinded the Obama-Biden AFFH Rule. Enjoy!”
Following is a thoughtful response from NAHRO CEO Adrianne Todman to which we say, AMEN! “While I am not surprised by this message, I am upset that so many people who live in, manage and build housing for low-income families had to see it. It insults them, their life, and their work. Unnecessary and hurtful.
“For all of you housers out there…keep your chin up! Your work is amazing and brings value to communities…all communities.
“If you are a person of modest means, know that your value is not derived by how much you make, but by who you are.”
